To the lightning: the end is near for Apple connector Lightning

With the arrival of European legislation and rumors about a next iPhone with a USB-C port, it is clear: the end is near for Apple’s own Lightning connector. Why does that happen and what exactly does it mean?

It’s September 2012 and Apple presents its latest phone: the iPhone 5. The phone is bigger, but there are some things smaller than previous iPhones. For example, the sim slot is smaller; instead of the micro SIM card, the iPhone 5 is the first phone on the market to now have a standard nano SIM card. That is a design by Apple, but at the bottom there is something that is much smaller than on previous iPhones.
