The EU is also investigating Adobe’s $20 billion takeover of Figma

The EU will also investigate Adobe’s acquisition of Figma, which makes software for designing interfaces. The European Commission is concerned about a lack of competition in the market for such software. Adobe wants to pay $20 billion for Figma.

The Commission explains in a letter that the acquisition of Figma may jeopardize global competition for ‘providing interactive product design tools’ and ‘providing tools that create digital assets’. This is because the Commission believes that Figma is clearly one of Adobe’s largest competitors in this area and it is unlikely that another competitor will emerge in the foreseeable future.

The Commission intends to conduct further investigations into the proposed takeover to check whether these concerns are justified. She will work closely with ‘other competition watchdogs’ to find out. The Commission has until December 14 to do this. In the United Kingdom and the US the takeover is also already being scrutinized.

Ahead of the acquisition, Adobe appears to have already phased out its Figma counterpart, Adobe XD. XD is no longer available for purchase separately, it is no longer in the Creative Cloud interface and the program’s website is already offline.
