Valve has announced that starting February 15, Steam will no longer support macOS versions 10.13 and 10.14, also known as High Sierra and Mojave. Those were the last versions that could run 32bit applications and games.

Starting February 15, Steam Client installations on macOS 10.13 and 10.14 will no longer receive updates, including security updates. let Valve know. Technical support is also no longer offered. According to Valve, this change is necessary because ‘core features’ of the Steam client use an embedded version of Google Chrome, while this browser will soon no longer support the two macOS versions. Also, future versions of the gaming client would require macOS features and security updates that are only present in newer versions of Apple’s operating system.

Games that do not support 64-bit executables will probably remain playable on these operating systems for some time from February 15, although Valve says it can no longer guarantee the functionality of the games. From ‘the end of 2023’, Steam games that only offer 32bit support will no longer be allowed. According to Valve, more than 98 percent of Steam users with a Mac are already running OS version 10.15 or later.

The Mojave version of macOS was the last to support the 32bit architecture. With the Catalina update, from 2019, that support was discontinued. Apple itself stopped supporting macOS High Sierra and Mojave in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
