Sony sells its Online Entertainment division, which was responsible for, among other things, EverQuest, the first MMO that was also successful outside of Asia. The division is taken over by an investment company.

The division, which in addition to EverQuest also has a number of other MMOs such as DC Universe Online and Star Wars Galaxies to its name, will go through life as Daybreak Games after the acquisition by investment company Columbus Nova. That reports TechCrunch.

The new owners plan to keep Sony Online Entertainment’s existing games running, as well as continuing development of Everquest Next. In addition, the mmo branch of Sony expects to have more money for game development under its new owner. Also, the company will not only release games for Sony’s console, but also for the Xbox and for mobile phones.

It is not entirely clear why Sony is selling the branch, but the company has been looking for ways to save for some time. For example, the telephone branch laid off 1,000 employees.
