Sony makes it possible via a firmware update to adjust the volume of the WF-1000XM3 headphones by tapping the earbuds. Previously, this was only possible via a wirelessly connected smartphone or with a voice command.

The functionality is part of firmware version 2.0.2 for the WF-1000XM3 headset. That update also adds support for Amazon Alexa and makes it possible to see how full the battery of the accompanying charging case is.

Volume control via the touch sensor can only be set as a replacement for other functionality, according to user experiences on reddit. It was already possible to operate Google Assistant and the noise reduction with touch. Volume control seems to have to be chosen as a replacement for one of those options.

According to Sony, the firmware update also improves Bluetooth connectivity with iOS and Windows 10. Users can update the earbuds via the Sony Headphones Connect app for Android and iOS. Sony announced the WF-1000XM3 in July. The wireless earphones with noise canceling have been available since August and currently cost about 188 euros.
