An update of version 2.0 of VLC Media Player has been released. This open source and cross-platform media player can play a variety of audio, video and streaming formats without the need to install the appropriate codec. There is also a version for Windows. The source code should also make the program usable for operating systems such as Linux, BSD and Solaris. A version for Android is in development.

Version 2.0, codenamed Twoflower after a character from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, is a lot faster on systems equipped with a multicore processor. Furthermore, the program now supports more media formats, subtitles are displayed in better quality and there is experimental support for Blu-ray discs. In version 2.0.8 the following changes and improvements have been made:

  • Fix ISDB-S tuning on Linux.
  • Fix crash in QTsound.
  • Fix use after free in sgimb module.
  • New Kannada translation.
  • Fix crashes in libavcodec module.
  • Fix invalid memcpy in MMS access module.
  • Improve resistance against malformed MKV files.
