Software Update: Mozilla Firefox 28.0 Beta

As we are used to from Mozilla, the first beta release of the next version has already appeared shortly after the release of a stable version of the Firefox web browser. Version 28, which should be released on March 18th, will include support for gamepads, vp9 video decoding, and Opus in WebM. Furthermore, the touch version for Windows 8 can be tested and the Notification Center in OS X can now show web notifications. Below is the still incomplete overview of the improvements that we can expect in version 28.

New:

• Firefox for Windows 8 touch preview available (see blog post)
• Gamepad API finalized and enabled (learn more)
• VP9 video decoding implemented
• Support for Opus in WebM
• Volume control for HTML5 audio/video
• Mac OS X: Notification Center support for web notifications

Changed:

• Removed support for spdy/2

Developer:

• Support for multi-line flexbox in layout
• Experimental support for CSS sticky positioning (Aurora only – demo)
• Support for MathML 2.0 ‘mathvariant’ attribute
• Background thread hang reporting
• implemented and enabled

Known Issues

• Moving Firefox to background while playing a flash video in full screen mode and bring it back to view will freeze the app (see 809055)
• Text Rendering Issues on Windows 7 with Platform Update KB2670838 (MSIE 10 Prerequisite) or on Windows 8.1 has a workaround (see 812695)
