The developers of 7-Zip released a new beta release of their eponymous archiving program on Monday. Last year it was decided to use the year of release as the main issue, but in this and the previous release it seems to have deviated from this again. 7-Zip can handle a variety of compression formats, including zip, cab, rar, arj, lzh, chm, gzip, bzip2, z, tar, cpio, rpm, deb, and of course the proprietary 7z. Furthermore, the software is capable of opening iso files and Nsis installation packages. The changelog for this release shows the following changes and improvements:

• 7-Zip now can unpack SquashFS and CramFS filesystem images.
• 7-Zip now can unpack some TAR and ISO archives with incorrect headers.
• New small SFX module for installers (in Extra package).
• Some bugs were fixed.
