Software Update: 7-Zip 18.03 Beta

Version 18.02 beta of 7-Zip has been released and due to a bug a sequel was released shortly afterwards. This open source archiver can handle a wide range of compression formats, including zip, cab, rar, arj, lzh, chm, gzip, bzip2, z, tar, cpio, rpm, deb and of course the proprietary 7z. Furthermore, the software is able to open iso files and nsis installation packages. Since version 16, the program can handle large, multi-file zip files of the type z01, z02, etc. Support for zip.001, zip.002, etc. was already there. Since version 18.01, the following changes and improvements have been made:

What’s new after 7-Zip 18.01:

  • The speed for single-thread LZMA/LZMA2 decoding was increased by 30% in x64 version and by 3% in x86 version.
  • 7-Zip now can use multi-threading for 7z/LZMA2 decoding, if there are multiple independent data chunks in LZMA2 stream.
  • 7-Zip now can use multi-threading for xz decoding, if there are multiple blocks in xz stream.
  • New localization: Kabyle.
  • Some bugs were fixed.

What’s new after 7-Zip 18.02 beta:

  • The bug in 18.02 beta was fixed. It could not create xz archive from GUI.
