On Monday, several Israeli government websites were inaccessible due to a DDO attack. These included the sites of the Ministries of the Interior, Health, Justice and Welfare. It is unknown who was behind the attack.

The attack would be the largest cyber attack ever carried out against Israel, an unnamed source told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. The source works at the Israeli Defense Ministry. Although the official’s claim cannot yet be confirmed, the Ministry of Defense and Israel’s National Cyber Directorate declared a state of emergency during the attack.

The defense forces say the attack affected websites using the gov.il domain. That domain is used for all government websites. The Israeli government suspects that a state or large organization carried out the attack, but has not yet determined who is behind it. The extent of damage caused by the DDOs attack is still under investigation. It is also looking at whether important companies, such as electricity and water companies, have been affected by the attack.

Update, 12.53: The original version of this article stated that the Israeli Defense Ministry websites do not use the gov.il domain. This turned out not to be true. That is why the article has been amended.
