The Sega Mega Drive Mini will be released worldwide on September 19 and will come with 40 pre-installed games. Buyers can opt for a version with one or two USB controllers. Previously, the console would only be released in Japan last year.

The company announced the release date at the annual Sega Fes event, Kotaku writes, among others. The console comes with forty games, of ten games the company has announced the title. Examples of games include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Castlevania: Bloodlines, and Gunstar Heroes.

M2, the developer behind the Sega Ages compilations, among other things, is responsible for the console’s software. Kotaku does note that some games coming to the Japanese console were never released in Europe, so the European version may come with other games.

The controllers of the Mega Drive Mini are the same size as the original controllers and work with USB. The console can be purchased with one or two controllers. The Sega Mega Drive Mini with one controller costs 68 euros converted with VAT. The version with two controllers costs 87 euros converted with VAT. It is currently unknown whether the controllers can also be purchased separately.

The small version of the Mega Drive was announced last year at the previous edition of the Sega Fes event. At that time there was only talk of a release in Japan, in honor of the thirtieth anniversary of the Mega Drive. Last summer, the console was delayed. The manufacturer wanted to “rethink” the design. Sega also announced that it wanted to release the console worldwide, because the announcement of the console was well received in the west.

The original Sega Mega Drive came out in Europe in 1990 and had a Motorola 68000 processor on board. Worldwide 30.75 million copies were sold and more than nine hundred games were released for the console. It is not known what kind of hardware the mini console has on board.
