Rumor: Apple and Samsung talk about settlement after patent infringement

Samsung and Apple are said to be discussing a possible settlement after several patent infringements. In this way, the two electronics giants, who have been at odds with each other for years, want to get out of the mutual lawsuits.

The talks are already taking place, The Korea Times reported on Monday. The paper spoke to sources who claim the two smartphone makers recently agreed to settle the dispute out of court. Samsung is thus following the example of Google, which previously reached a similar agreement with Apple.

“The main thing is to get rid of all those charges,” the sources told the Korean newspaper. German Florian Mueller, author of the well-known patent blog FOSS Patents, told The Korea Times that he expects a settlement to take place soon, possibly this summer.

The rumor about a possible settlement follows after it was announced that Samsung must pay Apple $ 120 million early this month for three patent infringements. Samsung said that Apple’s profit in the case “is not based on evidence” and filed a protest with the judge.

The damage amount determined by the jury is significantly less than the $2.2 billion that Apple had asked for. The final compensation has yet to be determined by the court. As a result, the amount can be even higher or lower. In an earlier patent case between the two tech companies, the jury ordered Samsung to pay approximately $1 billion in damages, but that was later nearly halved by the judge.
