Paypal blocks payments to Canadian VPN service
Paypal blocks payments to Canadian VPN service UnoTelly. In an email to the company, Paypal refers to its terms of use, which indicate, among other things, that services may not be used to facilitate copyright infringements.
TorrentFreak reports that Paypal has also closed down Usenet resellers in the past, as have torrent sites and hosting companies. UnoTelly is a company that provides paid VPN and DNS services and advertises that geo-blocking can be circumvented with them, among other things. According to TorrentFreak, this has gone wrong with Paypal and the company would therefore have started the blockade. After all, such services could facilitate copyright infringements.
UnoTelly reports to the news site that the payment account shutdown happened without warning and there is no way to appeal the decision. The service therefore has to look for a new payment processor. TorrentFreak also reports that Paypal may have written to several companies that provide similar services. Incidentally, it is not the first time that Paypal has closed a VPN service for these reasons, in 2013 this already happened with iPredator.
The question is whether it will remain with this one incident or whether Paypal will also go after other similar services. According to TorrentFreak, it would have come to this in this case, because UnoTelly explicitly advertises ‘unblocking’ services. The company advises users to change their payment settings.
