Parent company of Fiat, Opel, Peugeot will develop four EV platforms

Stellantis will develop four new electric car platforms that could make a total of two million electric cars annually. The company also wants to set up five battery factories with a total capacity of 260GWh.

Stellantis says wants to intensify the existing electrification plans and is therefore investing thirty billion euros in electrification and software up to and including 2025. Part of this are the four new platforms for electric cars, which can be used for different types of vehicles. The company wants seventy percent of European sales to be low-emission vehicles by 2030. For the United States, the target is 40 percent.

The four platforms are named STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large and STLA Frame. These platforms will have ranges of up to 500, 700, 800 and 800 kilometers respectively. Stellantis is also developing three electric drive modules for the platforms, which contain the motor, gearbox and inverter. These modules can be used flexibly. A Stellantis subsidiary brand can use them for electric cars as front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. In addition, they can also be used to provide a plug-in hybrid with electric propulsion.

The parent company of brands such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën and Jeep also wants to invest in large battery factories. There must be five of these, spread across the United States and Europe. These must have a total capacity of 130GWh by 2025, five years later this must be 260GWh. That capacity indicates how many batteries can be made in a factory, with the number of batteries depending on the size of the battery in question.

Stellantis also indicates that it wants to look at other forms of energy storage. For example, there is talk of ‘options with a high energy density’, nickel-and-cobalt-free solutions by 2024 and solid-state batteries by 2026.

All fourteen Stellantis subsidiary brands will participate in the electrification plans, although it is not clear whether all brands will actually produce electric cars. Dodge already has according to The Verge announced its intention to release a fully electric muscle car in 2024.
