Nikon introduces 28-75mm f/2.8 and working on 800mm f/6.3 VR for Z cameras

Nikon introduces a 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for the Z-series mirrorless cameras. It is a lighter and cheaper alternative to the existing 24-70 mm f/2.8. Nikon is also working on an 800mm f/6.3 VR telephoto lens for the Z cameras.

The new Nikkor Z 28-75mm f/2.8 weighs 565 grams and has a suggested retail price of 1049 euros. This makes the zoom lens a lot cheaper and lighter than the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S that Nikon has had in its range since 2019. That lens from the high-quality S-series weighs 805 grams and costs about 2245 euros at the time of writing.

According to Nikon, the 28-75mm is dust-resistant and ‘drip-proof’. The optical construction consists of fifteen groups in twelve elements and the minimum focusing distance is 19cm at 28mm and 39cm at 75mm. In both cases this concerns the distance measured from the sensor plane.

The new lens has a diameter of 75mm and is 120.5mm long. 67mm filters fit on the front thread. The existing 24-70mm f/2.8 has a diameter of 89mm, a length of 126mm and a thread for 82mm filters. Nikon will release the 28-75 mm f/2.8 on January 13, 2022.

Nikon is working on Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S

Nikon also announced that it is working on an 800mm telephoto lens with VR image stabilization for its Z-series mirrorless system cameras. The Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is equipped with, among other things, a Phase Fresnel element, with which the design can be made more compact compared to regular lens elements. Nikon previously used such PF elements in several telephoto lenses for its SLRs; the new 800mm is the first Z lens with PF element.

Details on the dimensions, weight and price of the 800mm f/6.3 VR S have not yet been disclosed. It can be concluded from the name that the lens receives VR image stabilization and is positioned in the S-series of Nikon’s most expensive lenses. The existing AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E for SLR cameras is in the Pricewatch for 20,499 euros.
