More than a year after Alphabets Nest announced its first indoor security camera, Nest is now launching an outdoor version. Nest has also adjusted the motion detection, so that the camera only sends a notification when a person enters the image.

According to the manufacturer, the Nest Cam Outdoor is resistant to weather influences and has a built-in speaker, making it possible to speak to both desired and unwanted visitors. The person in question can also say something back via a built-in microphone. The camera can record 1080p video at 30fps and has a 130-degree angle of view. The camera has eight infrared LEDs for night mode.

The outdoor camera is installed on a magnetic base plate and receives its energy via a cable that must be plugged into the normal electricity network. According to Nest, the cable is enough to ensure that people do not steal the camera. The bottom plate can be clicked onto a metal exterior of a house with either a screw or a magnet. To connect the camera to the network, only WiFi is an option. There is no option to connect an Ethernet cable to the camera.

The camera can store up to 30 days of moving images on Nest’s servers with a Nest Aware subscription. Users can watch via an app on a phone. It is also possible to set notifications when a person enters the image of the camera. It is not possible to actually identify people with this and only receive a notification when a certain person walks into the image. To tell the difference between a human, an animal or something else that moves, Nest uses artificial intelligence from its network. This recognition therefore does not take place locally.

Nest does not yet sell the Cam Outdoor in Europe, in the US the device costs $199. Since the Nest Cam retailed for both $199 and $199 at the time of release, it seems plausible that the Nest Cam Outdoor will also cost $199 in the EU.
