Developer Mossmouth has added crossplay to the multiplayer mode of its roguelike game Spelunky 2. This means players on the PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, the Nintendo Switch and PC can play together.

The patch notes of version 1.26 read that in both Adventure Mode and Arena Mode it is possible to play together with players on other platforms. Designer Derek Yu says “I feel like all the big goals in terms of online features have been achieved.” Since the release of Spelunky 2 in 2020, many players have been asking for cross-play support in the multiplayer mode. The process to make that possible was quite difficult, Yu says.

“Spelunky 2 is quite complex for online multiplayer play, despite being ‘only’ a 2D platformer. It allows four players to run around in a double-layered level with destructible terrain, fluid simulation and a lot of interactivity, where nothing in the level can be temporarily disabled , even though it’s out of sight. Plus, it’s a pretty detailed, fast-paced arcade game, so there’s a lot going on at any given time,” says the designer.

Yu writes that the developers will be collecting feedback about the new feature in the near future. Furthermore, the designer reports that new content for the single player mode is no longer being worked on.

Spelunky 2 is a 2D platforming game that revolves around exploring tunnels and caves. The first game came out for PC in 2008 and has since been re-released for various platforms. Spelunky 2 follows roughly the same formula as its predecessor, but includes more features, such as an online multiplayer mode. The previous game only supported local co-op.
