Mozilla tests Firefox feature to spot fake reviews

Mozilla has started testing a Firefox feature that can distinguish between real and fake user reviews. For the time being, this is a limited test among a group of American users who use Firefox Nightly version 120.

Users can activate the extension by clicking on a price tag icon in the URL bar, which will then review user reviews on a product page. The so-called Review Checker gives the reviews a score from A to F. The results provide an explanation to what extent the reviews are reliable. The feature can remove unreliable reviews and provides a selection of reliable posts, such as commented MSPoweruser on.

The Firefox maker uses technology from the company Fakespot, which was acquired by Mozilla earlier this year and offers the same service. Fakespot uses machine learning to distinguish real from fake user reviews. The company also continues to offer its own existing extensions. This functionality only works on a few websites, including Amazon, Steam, TripAdvisor and Yelp. It’s not clear on which sites Mozilla’s feature works.
