Modder Dialup.net has managed to get a variant of ChatGPT working on Windows 3.1. The creator calls the program WinGPT. The chatbot connects directly to OpenAI servers, but has limited functionality due to Windows 3.1 hardware limitations.

Thanks to the TLS 1.3 standard and an OpenAI API, WinGPT can connect directly to ChatGPT’s servers. The creator then had to develop a custom status bar for the UI in the C programming language themselves, explains Dialup.net. Microsoft made according to Neowin namely, never make the native status bar public to developers. Ironically, the Modder was assisted by today’s version of ChatGPT to implement that status bar.

The program would work relatively limited, partly because Windows 3.1 in practice only supports 256MB of RAM in 386 Enhanced mode. The answers that WinGPT generates are therefore quite short. In addition, the retro chatbot cannot answer contextual questions. One of the most important developments of ChatGPT is the ability to ask further questions, where the chatbot takes previous questions and answers into account.
