.NET Core 1.0, ASP.NET Core 1.0, and Entity Framework Core 1.0 will be available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Red Hat provides support for the open source platform and is collaborating with Microsoft on this. The software developer made the announcement during the Red Hat DevNation conference. The release is a step in Microsoft’s strategy to make the .NET development platform cross-platform and release it under an open source license.

The release includes the .NET Core runtime, libraries, and tool, along with the ASP.NET Core libraries. In addition, Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code extensions have been released to create .NET Core projects. Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 has also been released and the necessary .NET documentation has been published at docs.microsoft.com.

The release coincides with the announcement that Samsung has joined the Technical Steering Group of the .NET Foundation. The company thus joins Microsoft itself, and with Red Hat, JetBrains and Unity, to have a say in technical decisions regarding the .NET platform. Samsung will mainly focus on improving the ARM support of the platform. According to Microsoft, half of the contributions to corefx and coreclr now come from companies and organizations other than Microsoft.
