Microsoft makes Cortana suitable for iot devices with a screen

Microsoft is going to introduce Cortana on iot devices with a screen. The new feature should come with the Creators Update for Windows 10 IoT Core, which is expected to follow shortly after the release of the same update for Windows 10.

The extension of Cortana to iot is apparent from a presentation that Microsoft has given to its OEM partners in Shenzen, China. The iot devices could use ‘wake on voice from modern standby’ and ‘far field voice’. These are respectively a function to switch on a device from a complete off position and the possibility to receive a voice command from a maximum of four meters away.

Although Cortana will work on iot devices with schemes, it does not seem out of the question that the virtual assistant will also work on devices without a screen. A Microsoft representative emphasized at the presentation that the company is “concentrating” on devices with a screen and not those without. Whether devices such as Google Home or Amazon Echo will appear with this, but with Microsoft’s assistant, is not yet entirely clear.

The Creators Update, formerly known as Redstone 2, should be released for Microsoft’s latest operating system in early 2017. As the name suggests, the focus of this update is on creative tools such as the recently unveiled Paint 3D. In addition, these types of updates bring many smaller changes.
