Micron releases the P2 generation of SSDs with qlc nand memory under its Crucial brand name. For the time being, the line-up consists of two variants, with 250GB and 500GB, where the P1 generation consisted of models with 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.

As with the Crucial P1 SSDs announced last year, these are NVME models with m2-2280 form factor and PCI-E 3.0 x4 interface, which use Microns QLC Nand memory. The P2 SSDs are somewhat faster than the P1 models in terms of sequential reading.

In terms of sequential writing, the 500GB-P2 does that at 940MB/s, while the 250GB-P2 is faster at 1150MB/s. The performance leads Tom’s Hardware to suspect that Micron has switched from Silicon Motion’s SM2263 to a Phison controller for these Crucial SSDs compared to the P1.

The Crucial P1 250GB and 500GB are on the German site for suggested retail prices of 59.49 and 70.20 euros respectively. The P2 500GB, for example, has a considerably lower suggested retail price than last year’s P1 500GB, although it is now listed for 76 euros in the Pricewatch and the only price for the P2 500GB at the time of writing is above 85 euros.
