IBM introduces new x86 servers with AMD processors
IBM has presented new servers with four AMD Opteron processors on board. The x3755 M3 servers are equipped with four Opteron 6100 series CPUs. The x3630 M3 servers have two Intel CPUs on board.
The System x3755 M3 series comes in a 2u package and in its top configuration can run over four AMD Opteron 6100 series processors possess. These octocores provide a maximum of 32 cores in the server, each with a clock speed of 2 or 2.3 GHz. The 61KS and 61QS both have a TDP of 115W and plug into G34 motherboards. The four processors together have access to 32 memory slots and up to 16TB of disk space. Both hard drives, fans and power supplies are hot-swappable to minimize maintenance interruptions.
For less demanding environments, Big Blue also introduced the System x3630 M3 server line. These servers are equipped with two Intel Xeon processors from the 5600 series. The hexacores are baked at 32nm and each has a maximum clock speed of 3.46GHz for four cores and 3.33GHz for six cores. The servers come with up to 28TB of storage capacity and are said to offer the lowest cost per terabyte in IBM’s System x lineup.
