Facebook has put Venezuelan President Maduro’s official page on read-only following claims that Carvativir, a derivative of thyme, is a cure for the coronavirus without any side effects. That’s against Facebook’s disinformation policy.

The video in which Maduro makes the claim has been removed from his page. In addition, the president’s page will be “read only” for 30 days due to “repeated violations of our rules,” a Facebook spokesperson told Reuters on Friday. “We follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization which state that there is currently no medication that can cure a corona case”.

The claim that Facebook is all about, Maduro made in January. It is not clear why action will be taken against the claim and the account at the end of March. The president’s administration has not yet responded to Facebook’s move, but the Venezuelan president has previously accused major social media outlets of arbitrarily suspending accounts. The president has not been suspended from Instagram, also a Facebook service.
