DNS service Quad9 has moved its headquarters to Switzerland. As a result, all users are subject to the relatively strict privacy laws of that country, despite the fact that the servers are not located in that country.

Quad9, which offers the DNS resolver 9.9.9.9, has always been headquartered in the United States. Now the company has moved to Switzerland. According to the company, this is done in order to be able to process user data in a more privacy-friendly manner. “By staying in the US, the only guarantee to prevent data misuse is the company’s promise,” Quad9 says. Different rules apply in Switzerland, which means that the service should be more privacy-friendly.

Switzerland is not part of the European Union and therefore does not specifically follow the GDPR. However, the country has its own privacy laws that are very similar to the European privacy law. Under Swiss law, users of a service are also protected by Swiss law if they do not live in Switzerland, but the company is established there.

Quad9’s servers are not moving to the country. They remain spread over 90 countries. Quad9 is working for the switch with the company Switch, which manages, among other things, the .ch and .li domain names.
