Diablo II: Resurrected, the remaster of Diablo II, will not support 21:9 playback due to artificial intelligence not being able to handle it well. In 21:9 alpha, players could attack monsters at the edges of the screen, which then failed to react.

Earlier this year, Ultrawide players were able to see monsters and attacks beyond the limitations of the original game in the Technical Alpha, Blizzard wrote. As a result, ranged players could see, attack and eventually defeat monsters at the edges of the screen. However, those monsters did not react to the attacks, nor did they walk towards the player.

According to Blizzard, this is undesirable, especially when 21:9 gamers with 16:9 players are in a game. This would create uneven playing fields within multiplayer matches. Therefore, the 21:9 display in Diablo II: Resurrected is limited to 19:9, which would still be within the limitations of the engine. Users get black bars on both sides of the game. Blizzard tested that in the beta of August and is carrying it through for the time being.

Blizzard recognizes that this can be frustrating for 21:9 players and is still looking for solutions. On Twitter gives Diablo team leader Rod Fergusson recommends that the removal of the black bars is being looked into as the game zooms in. As far as we know, this will not be in the release version of the game yet. Diablo II: Resurrected will be released on September 23.
