Blizzard will introduce a seasons and ladders system in the next content patch for Diablo 3. In it, players can compete to top level leaderboards and earn new legendaries. A similar system will be introduced for the Rifts.

Josh Mosqueira, game director for Blizzard, announced the additions to the game at the release event of the expansion for Diablo 3, Reaper of Souls. That reports Diablo Fans. Each season, players can compete for places on the ladder and find new legendary items. Levels are added to the Rift system; whoever reaches the highest level the fastest gets the highest spot on the ladder. Whether the legendary items that play in ladders and Tiered Rifts are exclusive to those game modes has not yet been determined.

Mosqueira emphasizes that the systems are introduced with the first content patch and not with the first regular patch. There has been no official announcement about when this content will be released by Blizzard. The latest expansion, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, is now available.
