The DeLorean from the classic Back to the Future movies is going back into production after almost 35 years. In the film trilogy, the car became a time travel machine when the mythical speed of 88 miles per hour was achieved. The car manufacturer hopes to release the first replicas in 2017.

The DeLorean Motor Company will rebuild the car for the first time since 1982. Production ceased in 1983, when approximately 9,000 units had been produced. Thanks to a change in law introduced in December 2015, the company is now allowed to build small numbers of the DeLorean DMC-12, the DeLorean Motor Company said. It would be the first time that the car is built in America, because the factory was previously located in Northern Ireland. Now the factory is in Texas.

DeLorean Motor Company CEO Stephen Wynne estimates there are enough parts to build nearly 300 replicas of the famous car, he told KPRC2. The first cars are expected early in 2017. Refurbished DeLoreans sell for around $50,000. Wynne hopes that the new models can be put up for sale for less than $100,000, or nearly $92,000.

The DeLorean became best known and famous for its stainless steel bodywork and for its role in the Back to the Future trilogy. In this, the vehicle was instrumental as it could travel through time if it reached 88mph. This sparked the adventures of Marty McFly and Dr. Emmet Brown in the movies. Although we still have to wait for the reliable hoverboards that the films promised, at least the car will be available again soon.
