Dell Releases Developer Edition of XPS 13 9300 with Ubuntu 20.04 lts

Dell is releasing a Developer Edition of the XPS 13 running on Ubuntu 20.04 lts. It is the first laptop to come out with that version of the operating system. It is a Developer Edition of the most recent XPS 13, which was announced earlier this year.

Canonical says the Ubuntu laptops will be available from Tuesday with Ubuntu 20.04 long term support. That version of the operating system came out in April. The OS includes the Gnome 3.36 desktop environment, new snap packages and the Yaru dark mode theme.

According to Canonical, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the fingerprint scanner work immediately on start and the lts release will receive long-term security support as always. Dell and Canonical have been collaborating on Project Sputnik since 2012, with Dell providing laptops with Ubuntu. The Developer Edition 2020 is the first laptop that comes standard with Ubuntu 20.04.

The Developer Edition 2020 is an XPS 13 9300. It was announced earlier this year during the CES fair. That laptop has a 13.4″ screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. The laptop comes in variants with a screen with a full HD+ or a UHD+ resolution. The XPS 13 9300 contains an Intel CPU from the Ice Lake generation and has up to 32GB of memory.

The laptop will be available from Tuesday. The device costs USD 1099 in the US. Converted and including VAT, that is 1329 euros.
