Canon EOS 80D DSLR photos and specs leaked

Photos of the Canon EOS 80D have been leaked. The SLR will probably get a 24.2-megapixel sensor and a new autofocus system with 45 focus points. Photos of a new 18-135mm lens and two PowerShot compact cameras have also emerged.

Canon will probably provide the EOS 80D SLR with a new sensor, because although the manufacturer previously released cameras with a 24.2-megapixel chip in the aps-c format, the 80D will receive a variant with Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. This phase-detection focus technique was first applied by Canon in 2013 in the EOS 70D, then on a 20.2-megapixel sensor.

According to the list of specifications published by digicam info with the photos, the sensor has an iso range of 100 to 16,000. The speed remains the same at 7fps compared to the 70D. Since the 80D has a sensor with more pixels, this means that the new model probably has a faster image processor. When using live view it would be possible to shoot at 5fps in combination with focus tracking.

The autofocus system appears to be completely new. The specifications speak of a system with 45 points, all of which are sensitive cross-type. The current EOS 70D has 19 focus points and the more advanced 7D Mark II has 65 af-points. Furthermore, the EOS 80D has an optical viewfinder that shows one hundred percent of the field of view. That would be a first for the xxD series; earlier cameras like the 70D show 98 percent of the image. The screen is a 3″ LCD that can be tilted and is touch sensitive.

For the time being, Canon will only retain a 4k film function for its absolute top model, the EOS-1D X Mark II. The new 80D has to make do with full-hd with a maximum of 60fps. The camera also gets a function for making time-lapse videos and there is support for WiFi.

Along with the EOS 80D, Canon will introduce a new 18-135mm zoom lens. This is also apparent from photos that have appeared online. It is an 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, which can be combined with a ‘power zoom adapter’. This accessory is placed like a dock under the lens and probably contains servo motors that ensure smooth zooming, which is desirable when filming.

Canon also comes with two new PowerShot compact cameras. Digicame info has published photos of the G7 X Mark II and SX720HS. The successor to the G7 X gets a different look, with a larger handle. The 1″ sensor and lens with a range of 24-100mm in 35mm equivalent and aperture of f/1.8-2.8 will probably remain the same. The SX720 HS is a travel zoom camera with 40x optical zoom. That’s ten times more zoom than the SX710 HS and also the appearance of the new model has been significantly changed.

The official announcement of the new Canon products will probably follow in a few days. The Japanese digicam-info website regularly publishes a number of photos and specifications a few days before the launch.
