Blizzard cancels BlizzCon conference

Blizzard has canceled this year’s BlizzCon edition. In April, the game company thought it was too early to cancel the annual conference, but Blizzard has now decided to do so.

BlizzCon’s executive producer Saralyn Smith said after much consideration they had finally come to “the very difficult decision not to hold BlizzCon this year.” The event was originally scheduled for late October and early November and was to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Smith says there have been many discussions at Blizzard in recent times about what a conference might look like in light of current health and safety considerations. She writes that there has also been talk of different avenues Blizzard might take, but that any choice would be complicated by fluctuations in national and regional health guidelines expected in the coming months.

There may be another alternative to BlizzCon being held online. According to Smith, that is now being discussed. She says the aim is to organize this as early as possible, but also points out that this is new territory for Blizzard and therefore it is likely that it won’t take place until early next year. It is not yet clear when more information will be provided.
