Apple has released a second beta for the Apple TV software and one of the added features is support for HomeKit. The media player can therefore be used to remotely control lamps or locks, for example.

At the launch of the second beta of the Apple TV software, the release notes state that the build “includes support for Family Sharing and can be used to test AirPlay and HomeKit with iOS apps,” Apple Insider noted. Homekit is Apple’s home automation platform: devices that support the platform can be controlled with apps on Apple devices running iOS 8. The Apple TV seems to become the hub for remote control when the user is not at home.

Once a user logs into iCloud via Apple TV, the media player can register as an access point for the HomeKit API. Devices in the house that support the platform then synchronize with the small set-top box, storing information with Apple’s cloud service via Cloudkit, while Keychain takes care of the storage of the paired keys that are exchanged.

Numerous manufacturers are working on support for Homekit, such as Oxxio, which wants to offer power management options. It seems likely that the Apple TV will eventually also receive support for control via Siri, so that users can control devices in their home with voice control. However, the Apple TV has only received a modest update since its introduction in 2012, and there is no indication of a new version coming. Apple is reportedly in a lengthy negotiation with content providers to expand the player’s functionality in this area.
