Symantec is investigating whether it should split into a security products company on the one hand and a data storage company on the other, claims Bloomberg. A decision on this could be announced within a few weeks.

The company’s new CEO, Michael Brown, is said to support a split, having previously considered the possibility. In April, Symantec JPMorgan Chase & Co. in the arm to investigate the strategic possibilities. Symantec is struggling with disappointing results due to the shrinking PC market, where the company derives the majority of its revenues from its security products.

After a split, the two business units could better focus on their markets, while acquisitions are also possible. EMC and HP, among others, would be interested in either the storage part or the security branch. HP announced on Monday that it would split up, while eBay recently announced that it would divest Paypal and divide itself into two parts.
