Several car manufacturers have established privacy policies in order to maintain the confidence of motorists. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Toyota belong to this alliance of car manufacturers, among others.

The policy has three main points for attention. Motorists can initially expect transparency, according to the manufacturers. Manufacturers want to start distributing their privacy policies through user manuals and on their websites. The manufacturers also make it clear that sensitive information is prioritized when it comes to security, such as where the car has been. Finally, manufacturers report that there should be clear guidelines about when something may be shared with other authorities.

The companies also promise not to collect more information than necessary. In addition, the processing of data should only be for business purposes and they impose themselves that they may not keep data longer than necessary.

Sensors, software and connectivity via, for example, 4G offer motorists more and more options, but at the same time, the privacy of road users is more at stake. According to the report, the rules drawn up must be in force on the models for 2017 at the latest.
