Apple iOS 9.3 shows whether iPhone is under employer supervision

The latest beta version of iOS 9.3 shows that Apple will clearly display whether an iPhone is supervised by an employer. When the Device Enrollment Program is activated, a notification will appear on the lock screen.

With DEP and Mobile Device Management, employers can manage and configure their employees’ iOS devices. It is also theoretically possible to monitor internet traffic and to determine the location of the device. Currently, it is not immediately visible to users whether DEP is enabled on an iPhone. Apple seems to be changing that with iOS 9.3, 9to5Mac noted.

On Reddit, a user posted screenshots of the lock and about screen. The lock screen reads “This iPhone is managed by your organization”. In the settings, the name of the relevant organization should also be visible and here Apple clarifies that it can determine the location of the device and view the internet traffic.

While displaying the notification doesn’t change user privacy, Apple seems to want to make business iPhone users more aware that their employer can monitor their phone. Apple is expected to release the final version of iOS 9.3 in March.
