On Plextor’s homepage we find brand new firmware for the PX504A DVD-RW drive, the version in question is 1.01. Upgrading will eliminate a bug that can cause a hang-up and, according to Plextor, will improve the write quality of the drive. Unfortunately, not everything is rosy yet; when updating, there are still a number of points to consider to prevent hang-ups:

Fixed Bugs:

Hang-up during fixed packet writing with DirectCD

Improvements:

Write quality for CD-R and CD-RW media

WARNING: Hang-up can occur under several conditions during Firmware Upgrade.

It is recommended: to disable Auto Insert Notification

to connect the drive as Master to the secondary port
