What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus, often described as ringing in the ears, is the experience of hearing a sound that is not coming from an external source. People may hear ringing, buzzing, hissing or other noises. It can be temporary or long-term, and the intensity varies from person to person. Loud environments, stress or fatigue can make the symptoms worse.

If tinnitus is bothering you, the iPhone’s Background Sounds feature may help reduce how noticeable the ringing feels. Your iPhone can play soft, continuous sounds such as white noise, rain or ocean waves, which many people find calming.

Background Sounds on iPhone

With Background Sounds, your iPhone plays a steady sound that can help mask ringing or buzzing in the ears. This may make it easier to concentrate, relax or fall asleep. Some people with tinnitus feel less discomfort when these sounds are playing. While it may not work for everyone, it can be worth trying.
