According to Bloomberg, Apple is testing a new Mac Studio with an unannounced M3 Ultra SoC. The chip is said to have 32 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. It is not known exactly when the chip will appear, but it will probably not happen until the end of next year at the earliest.

According to developer logs which were seen by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman Apple’s M3 Ultra test chip has 32 CPU cores. This would involve 24 Performance cores and 8 more energy-efficient Efficiency cores. This may increase the number of cores compared to the current M2 Ultra, which has a total of 24 processor cores. The M2 Ultra can also be supplied with a GPU with 60 or 76 cores, but the tested M3 Ultra has a maximum of 80 GPU cores.

Apple hasn’t officially announced its M3 series yet. However, the first Macs with an M3 SoC will appear in October, according to Bloomberg. An M3 Pro and M3 Max may follow in 2024. Gurman speculates that the M3 Ultra, which is now being tested in a Mac Studio, won’t be released until late 2024 at the earliest. The M3 series is expected to be produced on TSMC’s 3nm process.
