Download QT Lite 1.0

Anyone who wants to view content in Apple’s QuickTime format previously had the choice between installing QuickTime (whether or not in combination with iTunes) or using QuickTime Alternative. This installs everything needed to view the QT content, the so-called codecs, but not Apple’s own software. After Codec Guide had to remove download links to QuickTime Alternative at the beginning of this month at Apple’s request, many people believed that this would be the death knell for this initiative. Indeed, no new versions have been released since then, but a similar program called QT Lite can now be found on the same website.

It is not clear exactly who is behind QT Lite, but the installation bears many similarities to that of QuickTime Alternative. The download is almost 10MB in size and contains version 7.1.5.120 of the QuickTime codecs. If QuickTime Alternative is detected during installation, it will need to be uninstalled before the QT Lite installation can continue. Version 1.0 of QT Lite ships without a changelog.
