Telenor is working on a cheap webcam with Firefox OS
Telecom provider Telenor is working on a webcam based on Firefox OS. It should be a low-priced device that can distribute video images over the Internet and also be able to shoot photos.
The Norwegian company has posted details about its Firefox OS webcam, which goes by the name Gonzo, on its website. According to Telenor, the device should above all become cheap, with it being marketed for “disposable prices”. With the Gonzo video images can be distributed via the internet: only the correct URL is required to view the images. In addition, the device takes photos every few minutes, so that a kind of time-lapse video can be made.
Gonzo is always on, and can shoot images for about a month with its built-in battery. Connection to the internet is made via a 2G connection, which means that the images are in low resolution due to the limited bandwidth of 2G networks.
The Firefox OS webcam is part of Telenor’s ‘Exploratory Engineering’ program. The idea is that the project will take three months to work on, but it is still unclear if and when Gonzo will hit the market and at what price.
