Reddit considers charging users for promotional content submissions
Reddit is thinking about charging users for advertising in the form of promotional content. In this way, users are given the opportunity to, for example, post messages that are specifically about a person or company. They will probably have to pay for this.
Two months ago there was already the plan to offer users a stage for promotional content. The idea behind this is that such content does not always have to be seen as ‘spam’ and that the value can differ per community. Reddit therefore says that it has now worked out the plans further, writes one of the Reddit crew members on the site.
To prevent users from abusing the future functionality and, for example, placing too much advertising, Reddit wants to take some measures. One of those measures is that moderators assess in advance whether someone is allowed to post promotional content. For this, the mods look at how well someone falls within the community by studying their contributions.
Furthermore, Reddit wants to charge users who want to contribute promotional content. In this way, the crew members want to prevent the site from being flooded with advertising, as would be the case with Twitter, for example. They are still investigating how this should be designed and whether someone should pay once or periodically, for example.
The promotional content may be tagged with an as-yet-unknown color, Reddit says. Finally, the site also states that moderators will still be able to mark content as ‘spam’ – even if someone has paid in advance. That way, they have to maintain the value of posts for a particular community.
