AMD Releases Opteron X Server Processors
AMD has released a new processor line in the Opteron series. The Opteron X processors have to compete with Intel’s Atom processors for servers. There is a choice of two quad-core processors; one with and one without built-in GPU.
The quad-core Opteron processors become delivered as socs and have ‘Jaguar’ cores, which AMD also uses in Temash and Kabini apus. According to AMD, both processors should perform much better than comparable CPUs from the competition.
That would be because Opteron X processors have four cores and support 32GB of RAM per socket. Intel’s Atom processors in the S1200 series have two cores and support up to 8GB of RAM. It should be noted that the maximum tdp of the AMD processors is higher than that of the Intels.
The tdp of both processors has no fixed value, but can vary, depending on the set clock frequency of the cpu and gpu in the bios. AMD calls the result a tdp range. The range is between 9 and 17 watts for the Opteron X1150 and between 11 and 22 watts for the Opteron X2150.
HP has already announced that it will ship the Opteron X processors in its Moonshot servers. AMD is making the processors available immediately for prices of $64 for the X1150 and $99 for the X2150, when purchasing 1000 units.
