Since earlier this month, Xbox consoles have been showing a warning when using certain third-party accessories. Those affected can still use the relevant ‘unauthorized accessories’ for two weeks after detection, after which the hardware appears to be completely blocked.

Use of unauthorized accessories appears to be detected by Xbox consoles starting with Xbox OS version 10.0.25398.2266, showing error code 0x82d60002, reports Windows Central. As far as we know, users will only see the message while playing games online. According to a recent Microsoft support page this error message can be ignored for two weeks, after which the accessories will be permanently blocked. Users will then see the error code 0x82d60003.

It is not clear exactly since when Microsoft enforces the use of only official and licensed accessories. On October 20 reported a hardware manufacturer of unofficial adapter hardware, such as conversion adapters for PlayStation controllers, that certain branded products will soon no longer work on Xbox consoles.

For the time being, Microsoft itself has not provided a statement about the reason for blocking certain hardware. According to various media, the measure to only allow authorized accessories is intended to prevent the use of cheat devices. For example, there are adapters available that allow keyboards and mice to be connected to consoles, which in theory gives the user an unfair advantage over controller users in multiplayer games.

Update, 2:15 p.m: It was emphasized earlier in the article that the message is shown when playing games online.
