WSJ: Meta to release Twitter alternative Threads in Europe in December

Meta plans to release Threads, its alternative to X/Twitter, in Europe soon. Insiders report this to The Wall Street Journal. The platform was released in July in the United States, among others, but a release in Europe has not yet been released.

Threads will be released in the European Union sometime in December, the sources tell The Wall Street Journal. The platform has not yet been released in the EU due to the strict European laws surrounding online platforms, such as the Digital Services Act.

To comply with European laws, users will soon be able to view other people’s Threads content without creating an account, WSJ writes. This is currently not possible. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri previously said that all Threads users can now delete their account without having their Instagram account closed as well.

Meta’s social media platform was released in July. It is intended as an alternative to X, the former Twitter. Threads had 100 million users shortly after release, although that number has since dropped to around 73 million. Threads’ expansion into Europe would come on the heels of a declining number of advertisers on competitor content. X boss Elon Musk previously said that this ‘ad boycott’ would destroy his platform.
