Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures announce a fourth film in The Matrix film series. Lead actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return in the film, for their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

In making the announcement, Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, announced that Lana Wachowski will write, direct and produce the new film. She was also responsible for the existing trilogy together with her sister Lilly. Emmerich appreciates Wachowski’s input for what he describes as “a new chapter in the The Matrix universe.”

Variety writes that sources indicate that production of this new chapter in the science fiction film series should start in the course of 2020. Nothing is known about the story yet, and it is also unclear whether the role of Morpheus will return in the new The Matrix film. Actor Laurence Fishburne, who together with Keanu Reeves played in John Wick 2 and 3, was responsible for this film character in the previous three films. According to Variety sources, Morpheus will return, but may attract a younger actor.

Warner Bros. would have been trying to get a new The Matrix movie off the ground in recent years; for example, in March 2017 there was already a rumor about a new Matrix film. Those earlier efforts, however, would have been delayed by production rights hassles.

The previous three films have collectively grossed more than $1.6 billion and were written and directed by Lana Wachowski and her sister Lilly. “Many of the ideas about our reality that Lilly and I explored 20 years ago are even more relevant now,” says Lana Wachowski. In addition to Wachowski, Grant Hill is responsible for part of the production and Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell also contributed to the script.

The original The Matrix from 1999 was mainly distinguished by the story and the special effects, where at the time, among other things, the slow-motions of, for example, dodging bullets were praised. This was followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. Those films were less well received and many a fan will probably regret that he did not opt for that blue pill.
