In due course, UPC wants to activate the integrated WiFi module in the Horizon Media boxes to serve as a WiFi spot. Until now, the cable operator still uses separate cable modems to offer Wifispot, but the Horizon Media boxes have an internal cable modem.

By activating the WiFi module for the WiFispot function, which allows UPC customers to use the wireless internet for free within the service area of the cable provider, UPC gets more hotspots in the air. According to the cable operator, there are currently more than 500,000 hotspots active, while just under 300,000 customers have purchased a Horizon Mediabox. However, it is unclear how many customers use the Horizon Mediabox as a cable modem; some subscribers still have a separate cable modem for the internet connection.

It is not yet clear when UPC will activate the Wifispot function on the Horizon Media boxes on a large scale; UPC spokesperson Maaike Scholte says that a trial is currently underway. However, subscribers who register for Wifispots and participate in the trial will see a message that UPC wants to activate this function on all Horizon Media boxes, users report on the Chelloo forum. The cable company can enable this functionality remotely, but customers can also disable this feature if they wish. However, if the Wifispots function is deactivated, these customers will no longer be able to log in to the semi-public hotspots.
