Twitter ensures that photos stored with Twitpic remain available
Twitter is going to take over the photo database stored at Twitpic. This ensures that shared photos remain available. Twitpic has since pulled the plug on its photo service, something it announced earlier.
In a blog post, Twitpic announced that Twitter has agreed to take over the photo collection. The corresponding links on Twitpic’s domain are also kept up by the social networking site. In this way, photos shared by users of the photo service will not be lost. Twitpic’s website will go into read-only mode after the acquisition.
The acquisition of the photos and associated links follows after Twitpic, one of the most popular photo sharing services on Twitter, closed its doors. The makers decided to throw in the towel because Twitter demanded that they withdraw their application for the Twitpic brand name and an acquisition partner withdrew. It is not known who was interested in the photo service.
Twitpic had already announced that it would close its doors on October 25. Users were urged to download their content so that it would not be lost. This is still possible, despite the takeover of the content by Twitter. It is unclear whether the social networking site itself will make a new start with Twitpic in the long term.
