Toyota and Panasonic will investigate whether it is feasible to make prismatic batteries for cars together. Currently, batteries with cylindrical cells are mainly used in cars, prismatic variants are more compact.

The agreement entered into by Toyota and Panasonic complements the current partnership. Panasonic already supplies batteries for Toyota electric cars. The companies do not provide concrete information about the development of the batteries, but the aim of the collaboration is to make ‘the best possible battery’, which should then be made available for electric cars from Toyota and other brands.

Prismatic cell batteries are already widely used in smartphones. They are flat batteries with an aluminum housing. These batteries are smaller and lighter than cylindrical cell variants, but they are also more expensive and more vulnerable to overheating and swelling.

Panasonic has a 29 percent market share when it comes to batteries for electric cars, according to Reuters. The company supplies, among other things, the batteries for the Tesla Model S, 3 and X. The batteries in the current Toyota Prius also come from Panasonic.
