The Dune film by director Denis Villeneuve, which came out last month, is getting a sequel. The new film will be called Dune: Part Two and will hit theaters on October 20, 2023.

Film website Deadline, among others, reports the release date and film studio Legendary Confirms on Twitter the arrival of Dune: Part Two. According to the website, an important part of the negotiations between Legendary and Warner Bros. a deal so that the film will only be shown in cinemas for a period of time. The current Dune film is still on the silver screen, but can also be seen via streaming service HBO Max. That service has been available in Europe since Tuesday, but for now it is limited to Scandinavia, Spain and Andorra.

It was already largely clear that a sequel was on the way, given the text “Dune: Part One” at the beginning of the current film and how curiously abrupt the film ends. This ending coincides with events that roughly take place halfway through Frank Herbert’s original, 412-page novel from 1965, which is what both films are based on. In 1984 David Lynch released his version of Frank Herbert’s novel; that Dune movie was released on uhd blu-ray in august.

Warner Bros. doesn’t seem to get enough of new content around Dune for the time being. Dune: The Sisterhood, for example, should be released on HBO Max in 2022 or 2023. This TV series has been in the works for several years. Dune: The Sisterhood revolves around a mysterious group of women with extraordinary powers. They will eventually find their way to the planet Arrakis, or the desert planet Dune. The series should be seen as a prequel to the films.
