Spotify has announced in the publication of the quarterly figures that the service has 248 million monthly active users. 113 million million users have a paid subscription to the music streaming service.

The quarterly figures show that the number of 113 million users with a Premium subscription represents a 31 percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2018 and a 5 percent increase compared to the previous quarter. The 248 million monthly active users represents a 30 percent increase from the same quarter last year and a 7 percent increase when compared to the 232 million monthly active users from the previous quarter. The share of paying subscribers in the total number of monthly users remains fairly constant; this has fluctuated around 45 percent for several consecutive quarters.

During the previous quarter, 129 million users listened to Spotify streams without paying and were served ads. That number rose to 141 million in the third quarter, an increase of 29 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. However, Spotify reports that its advertising revenue has not lived up to expectations; while there was a 20 percent year-over-year growth in this area, the company said that could have been higher had it not been for integration issues with new order management software to replace Google’s Doubleclick Sales Manager. According to the Swedish company, this led to fewer orders and about 9 million euros in lost turnover.

Turnover amounted to 1.73 billion euros, an increase of 28 percent compared to a year earlier. Spotify made a profit of 54 million euros in the past quarter, while a small loss was incurred in the previous quarters. In the next fourth quarter, the streaming service expects a loss of between 31 and 131 million euros and that the number of paying Premium users will be between 120 and 125 million.

Spotify is optimistic about its position in the market. The company points to Apple; compared to Apple Music, the Swedish streaming service would gain twice as many monthly subscribers. Spotify would also welcome more users in absolute numbers than Amazon and the ratio between free users and paying users at Spotify would be three times as favorable.
